A crop cutting device (6) for an agricultural machine (2) according to the present invention comprises a plurality of knives (14), an actuating mechanism (22) for rotating a predetermined number of knives (14) of the plurality of knives (14) between a retracted position and an extended position, and a sensor arrangement comprising a plurality of sensors (60, 78, 82, 86) configured to monitor at least a configuration of the crop cutting device (6), in particular a configuration of the plurality of knives (14) and a configuration of the actuating mechanism (22).
