A capacitor-assisted electrochemical cell of various aspects of the present disclosure includes at least two first electrodes including one or more layers of a positive electroactive material disposedin electrical communication with a positive current collector; at least one second electrode comprising one or more first negatively charged active material layers disposed in electrical communication with the first negative current collector; and at least one composite electrode comprising one or more second negatively charged active material layers disposed in electrical communication with thesecond negative current collector. The second electronegative active material layer may be in the form of a plurality of electronegative active particles comprising one or more of a carbonaceous material and a metal oxide. Each negatively charged active particle may have a plurality of pores and a plurality of sulfur additive particles disposed in the plurality of pores.
