PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a honeycomb structure and a method for producing the same capable of inhibiting clogging of cells at a filter circumferential part.SOLUTION: The honeycomb structure 21 capable of inhibiting clogging of the cells 28 at the filter circumferential part 21B includes a filter core part 21A with a square cross section, and the filter circumferential part 21B arranged on the external surface of the filter core part 21A, and has a circular cross section. The filter core part 21A is composed of first honeycomb members 22A, and the filter circumferential part 21B includes second honeycomb members 22B. In the honeycomb structure 21, a packing layer 35 is packed in place of a honeycomb member with an extremely small perpendicular cross section.
