Process and apparatus for in situ production of biodiesel on a small scale, producing economically viable biodiesel without subsidies. To that end, small integrated plants process materials containing lipids with anhydrous bioethanol as solvent and reagent and sulphuric acid and potassium hydroxide principally as catalysts, producing up to 3 million US gallons ( 11.36 million litres) of biodiesel per plant per annum. The product is composed principally of fatty-acid ethyl esters and a chemically enhanced organic fertilizer as by-product. The raw material may include a wide variety of non-edible solid matter containing the lipids, which normally contain between 0.5% and 80% by mass of free fatty acids out of the total oils and fats. In addition to not competing with food production, since fertilizers are supplied for smallholders, the process and the apparatus allow the production of a sustainable liquid fuel.
