Roadable aircraft with extendable wings and thrust vectoring

Abstract

A roadable aircraft 10 includes a body extending along a longitudinal axis 14 and operable to house a human occupant. The roadable aircraft includes at least first and second wings 16,18 which are moveable between a retracted position for stowing and an extended position for flight. The wing cords between a leading edge 44 and a wing trailing-edge vectoring nozzle 45. The aircraft may include third and fourth wings 20,22 that are also extendable from a stowed position. The roadable aircraft includes a system for directing streams of air through the wings and out of the trailing-edge vectoring nozzles such that thrust for the body is generated. The aircraft may include a plurality of deployable, vectoring lift fans 82,86 which are also capable of producing thrust. Thrust for VTOL and cruise flight can be achieved by combining the thrust generated by the wing trailing-edge vectoring nozzles and/or the vectoring lift fans. An alternative to the wing trailing-edge vectoring nozzles would be to vector the entire wing.
