A wind velocity measurement system, a wind turbine, and a method for estimating wind velocity are presented. One or more light signals received from at least one light source are modulated to produce patterned light signals. The patterned light signals are projected towards a region of interest. At least a portion of reflected light signals reflected from the region of interest are received, where the reflected light signals are representative of an oscillating signal. A wind velocity is estimated based on the oscillating signal. FIG. 2
