In accordance with an example embodiment a method and apparatus for text entry is provided. The apparatus comprises at least one processor and a memory. The memory is adapted to store machine executable instructions therein, that when executed by the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to facilitate display of a virtual keyboard layout comprising a plurality of keys. The plurality of keys in the virtual keyboard layout are arranged based on one or more pre-defined criteria to facilitate optimal tracing of at least one of statistically common words and statistically common affixes. The apparatus is further configured to receive text entry in form of at least one input based on the virtual keyboard layout and to provide one or more word predictions in response to the received text entry.
