A watercraft maneuvering system includes a controller configured or programmed to control a watercraft propulsion system, a portable watercraft maneuvering device, and a captain tag. The portable watercraft maneuvering device includes a watercraft maneuvering operator operable to provide a command for a watercraft maneuvering operation involving generation of a propulsive force by the watercraft propulsion system, and generate a watercraft maneuvering command signal according to the operation of the watercraft maneuvering operator. The controller is configured or programmed to perform a tag state determining operation to determine whether or not the captain tag is in an active state. The controller is configured or programmed to perform a watercraft maneuvering control operation in response to input of the watercraft maneuvering command signal from the portable watercraft maneuvering device on a condition that the captain tag is in the active state.
