India uses the Nice Classification: 45 classes, 1 to 34 for goods and 35 to 45 for services. You file per class and you pay per class, so picking too few leaves a gap and picking too many wastes money. Describe what you actually do and this will tell you where you sit.
Each card opens the applications we hold in that class, so you can see what other people filed there before you commit to it.
Making something and selling something are different classes, and so are a product and the service built around it. Registering one does not cover the other.
What decides how much protection you actually get is the specification of goods and services written inside the class, not the number on the front. Classes 1 to 34 are goods. Classes 35 to 45 are services.
It reads your words, not your business. It matches the description you typed against the goods and services people commonly file under each class. It cannot see how you actually trade, and that is often what decides the class.
The class number is not the protection. Two applications in the same class can have completely different scope depending on the specification filed. The Registry examines the specification, not the number.
The 13th edition of the Nice Classification moved things. In force from 1 January 2026, it reassigned some goods and services between classes, so older advice online is not always right any more.
